WOW, WHAT A SPECTACULARLY BEAUTIFUL DAY IT WAS!
The snow was fabulous! Despite the cold weather,
brisk wind, and low waterfowl diversity, we had a
great day! Here is what we found.
7:30-11:00 AM Burke area lakes and ponds
w/ Patty Rourke (Potomac School Physics teacher)
All lakes were open water unless noted otherwise.
Burke Lake and golf course
2 Pied-billed Grebe
2 horned grebe
5 double-crested cormorant
307 Canada Goose
1 strange domestic goose
33 Mallard (at least 8 were hybrids w/ domestic)
6 Bufflehead (3 male, 3 female)
23 Ruddy duck
1 adult bald eagle
7 ring-billed gull
1 herring gull
2 american pipit
3 great blue heron
(the coot that was here on Thursday could not be
found this morning)
Lake Barton
5 ring-billed gull
Woodglen Lake
nothing
Lake Royal
195 Canada Goose
3 Hooded Merganser (2 female, 1 male)
2 domestic geese
15 ring-billed gull
1 american pipit

Ponds in Burke near Wilmington Rd mostly frozen:
In Meadow Pond found 17 canada geese and 35
Mallard
1:30-4:30 Oakton, Vienna, Fairfax (ADC maps 12,
13, 14, 15)
Marshes and most smaller ponds mostly frozen.
Ably assisted by sharp-eyed Flint Hill School
sophomores Alex Robbins and David Kay, and very
skilled substitute teacher Nolan Britt
Fox Lake and small pond nearby

1 Mallard X Black hybrid male
Trenholme Drive Lake
nothing, but couldn't see most of it.
Fair Lakes

4 white domestic ducks
1 Mallard X domestic hybrid
2 ring-billed gull
3 lakes at Fairview Park Drive
315 Canada Goose
15 ring-billed gull
1 great blue heron
1 adult cooper's hawk chasing doves and landing
in a tree for us to study in the scope!
1 Canada Goose had a yellow neck band with black
lettering Z69E
Fairfax County Government Center ponds
6 Canada Geese flying over
Random Hills marsh frozen, no waterfowl
Along the roads we also saw 4 red-tailed hawks
and 3 turkey vultures this afternoon.
No unusual land birds but did see: 25 cedar
waxwings, 1 ruby-crowned kinglet, 4
golden-crowned kinglet, 90 robins, 2 bluebirds,
colorful cardinals being chased from berry-laden
holly trees by agressive mockingbirds, and
others.
