I spent Saturday on the Northern Neck, and while not specifically birding,
did note a few things of interest. At Windmill Point there were 2 lingering
Surf Scoters, 26 Brown Pelicans, and a single Common Loon along with many
cormorants and various terns. For some reason, I had always assumed that
Brown-headed Nuthatches were absent from the Northern Neck, but I found them
relatively common along Rt. 695 between White Stone and Windmill Point. One
bird was even investigating what was presumably a nest cavity. Intersesting
stuff... Wild Turkeys appear to be doing well in the area. We saw 4 groups
totalling 12 birds in the fields off of Rt. 3 and Rt. 360. Migrant
passerines were limited to a few dozen Blackpoll Warblers and a single
Bay-breasted.
Take it easy,
Alex
