[va-bird] northern Northern Neck 2/21/04

I don't have enough time to list the entire list
but here are the highlights.

White-fronted Goose and snow (blue) goose among
2300 Canada Geese at the King George ponds and
surrounding farm fields along route 3.
These ponds also had 20 canvasback, 62
ring-necked duck, 4 american wigeon, 24 common
mergs, 1 red-breasted merg, 15 hooded mergs, 1
female common goldeneye, 22 coot, and 7 tundra
swan.
In surrounding fields were thousands of
ring-billed gulls, a red-tail, a kestrel, 8
horned larks, 2 red-shouldered hawks, and 8
white-crowned sparrows.

The Rappahannock River between Newland and
Leedstown had many red-breatsed mergansers,
mostly males (155 birds, with only 14 females).

Colonial Beach on the Potomac had many (130)
buffleheads, 75 dc cormorants, and 37
red-breasted mergs (3 female), and a
sharp-shinned hawk but I couldn't find the
Eurasian Collared Dove spotted there last week.

Currioman Landing on the Potomac had 250
canvasback, 1 ruddy duck, and 20 bufflehead.

Troy Creek (Leedstown) a private reserve with a
chain of beaver ponds had 59 gadwall, 3 american
wigeon, 25 mallard, 14 wood duck (2 female), 7
hooded merganser, 2 barred owl, 2 great horned
owl, 16 black duck, 2 adult and 2 immature bald
eagles, red-shouldered hawk, and 450 robins.

Peedee Creek (Leedstown) had 4 barred owls
hollering like monkeys just after dark.

Mothershead Tract of Rap Riv Valley NWR refuge
had 7 harriers all in one binocular field of view
at dusk, concentrating their hunting in the SE
corner of the field. I was hoping that a
short-eared owl would show up but none did. Also
heard 1 woodcock peenting and displaying,
starting at 6:20. Hundreds of geese and ducks
flew into surrounding marsh and river at dusk.
Spring peepers were singing like crazy.

All the best
Fred
