It is the first real day of school today and I
just had to get outside on this spectacular day
to take a lunch break from 2:30 to 3 with a pear
and yoghurt at Oak Marr Park adjacent to our
school campus.  This is a tiny little woodland
park next to a golf course.  We always talk about
MacArthur's classic wood warbler niche-
differentiation studies in Biology class, and it
was interesting to see signs of this even during
migration too.

In the oak forest:
--4 black-throated green warblers high in the
canopy
--3 black-throated blue in lower-middle heights.
--1 blue-winged warbler in lower-middle, but
perhaps a little lower, and flitting more among
the leaves than the BTBlue.
--2 american redstart in lower-middle heights
doing more flycatching than the others
--2 magnolia warblers a little lower than the
redstarts, flycatching and gleaning among the
leaves
--3 black-and-whites climbing about nuthatch-like
on the major limbs and occasionally on the trunk
at middle heights

In the same flock were 3 red-eyed vireos, 3
white-breasted nuthatches, 3 downy woodpeckers, 1
wood pewee, 4 carolina chickadees, and 3 tufted
titmice.  The titmice were concentrating on the
fall webworm nests.  The chickadees were spending
a lot of time upside down under the leaves and
tiny twigs.

The redstarts, magnolias, chickadees and titmice
were also glimpsed drinking and bathing in the
little stream.

SOng sparrows may be passing through because a
flock of 10 or so were in grasses and "weeds" in
our storm-water retention drainage "pond".  About
30 cowbirds, some in bizarre mottled plumage,
were foraging on the lawn.

All the best
Fred
