Hi!
I had a great time enjoying the upper Northern
Neck again today. I spent as much time frog
watching as bird watching on this beautiful balmy
day. I started at the route 3 ponds in King
George but it was socked in with fog at 7:30 so I
headed down to Leedstown in Westmoreland County
until about 3:00. Then I went to end of Muse Rd
(route 624 near washington's birthplace) to scan
the Potomac which was almost as flat as glass.
Then I finished the day at the King George ponds,
unsuccesfully searching for some short-eared owls
there.
HIGHLIGHTS:
1. At Leedstown: Drakes Marsh and Trader Farm
(private), roads, and PeeDee Creek:
about 175 tundra swans
22 male 6 female shoveler
13 male 10 female green-winged teal
about 10-15 pairs of gadwalls
1 pair of american wigeon
7 male and 12 female ring-necked duck
2 pair pintail
3 pair mallard
2 pair wood duck
2 pair hooded merganser
5 male 16 female common merganser
16 male 2 female red-breasted merganser
26 snipe
3 greater and 3 lesser yellowlegs
7 bald eagles (3 pairs, 1 imm)
2 pairs of ospreys
4 red-tailed hawk
2 red-shouldered hawk
1 harrier
1 cooper's hawk
1 tree swallow
singing pine warbler, and just a few
yellow-rumps.
no hermit thrush, phoebe or winter wren
2 fox sparrow
7 white-crowned sparrow
Singing at 2:00 at the new beaver pond at PeeDee
Creek were choruses of spring peepers, upland
chorus frogs, wood frogs, and leopard frogs, and
my first brimley's chorus frog.

Heard tundra swans at neighboring Washington's
Birthplace but didn't have time to visit there
and still be able to check out the King George
Ponds.
