Sorry for the late post.
On Sunday 11/09/03 I was travelling to the
Northern Neck along route 3 between
Fredericksburg and King George and was amazed by
the number of ducks in the large ponds in the
farmland. I think some of these ponds may be
left-over after mining excavated large holes
because three of the ponds were on mining company
(Aggregate Industries) land. All the ponds were
viewed from route 3 or a public side road. I
have never seen so many ring-necked ducks. At
Burnley Road pond, Farley Vale Farm Pond, and
Aggregate Industries ponds I saw the following
between 7 and 8 AM. I wished I had more time and
permission of landowners so I could look more
carefully from better angles and stay longer.
There were probably more birds than I could see
from the roadsides.
5 pied-billed grebe
8 double crested cormorant
1270 ring-necked ducks
34 hooded merganser
20 gadwall
40 mallard
40 ruddy duck
625 canada geese
52 tundra swan
Also present were 2 horned lark, 1 yellow-bellied
sapsucker, 1 kestrel, 2 harrier, 2 bald eagle, 6
meadowlark, and 400 ring-billed gulls.
I hope you have a great day,
Fred
