This is a belated post from Friday, April 8, of an unusual late night
sighting of a HUMMINGBIRD, presumed to be RUBY-THROATED. It was
approximately 10 or 10:30 p.m. when I happened to look out our second floor
bedroom window to see what I initially thought to be a rather large moth
flying around the street light across the street. I quickly determined it
did not have "moth" wings and the way it was flying didn't seem on point for
a moth. In fact, I could not detect any wings at all, only an elongated,
hummingbird-like body. It moved about the base of the lamp in hummingbird
fashion and I can only assume it was consuming small insects attracted to
the light. I have seen photographs of nighttime forages at feeders (sugar
water) but this was a first for me.
