It was wicked cold with biting wind Sunday
morning at the ponds in King George along Route
3. Some of the water was frozen or like pack
ice, but most was open. Most of the gulls and
geese were huddled very close together and most
of the ducks were in sheltered corners. I had the
following totals between 7:30 and 9:30 AM
Pied-billed Grebe 6
Double-crested Cormorant 1 immature
Tundra Swan 12
Canada Goose about 1700, birds were too close and
huddled to see if there were any Cackling.
Green-winged Teal 2 male, 1 female = 3
American Black Duck 27
Mallard 153 male, 158 female = 311
Northern Pintail 2 male
Shoveler 8
Gadwall 38 male, 29 female = 67
American Wigeon 11 male, 13 female = 24
Redhead 14 male, 3 female = 17
Canvasback 114 male, 32 female, plus 55 = 201
Lesser Scaup 13 male, 13 female = 26
Ring-necked Duck 470 male, 59 female = 529
Common Goldeneye female 1
Bufflehead 3 male, 1 female = 4
Hooded Merganser 42 male, 80 female = 122
common merganser 4 female
Ruddy Duck 11 male, 42 female = 53
American Coot 70
Ring-billed Gull 2300 on ice and on nearby fields
15 Herring Gulls
American Pipit 1
Bald Eagle 1 adult, 1 immature = 2
At Wilna I could not find the Leconte's or
clay-colored sparrows. Lots of savannahs (70)
despite the frigid wind and ice-coated grasses.
It took me 4 tries to see the Julia Metz harris
sparrow last year. Maybe I'll find the Leconte's
next time on my 4th try this winter. 8>D
