Occoquan NWR was not terribly birdy this morning, but there was a nice
selection of waterfowl. Highlights were 2 horned grebes in Belmont Bay, king
rail in the marsh along the wildlife drive (thanks to Jay Keller), all three
mergansers, both scaup, american wigeon, wood duck, gadwall, green-winged teal,
bufflehead, tree sparrow, and kestrel. Lots of osprey were present. Many of
the larger markers in the river had an osprey perched on it. The eagle nest in
the refuge had both adults on it, warily watching a third eagle circling
nearby.
