Last night, around 8:35pm, I went out to my backyard area (of a townhome) to
put some nails into the fence so that our grape vine would have a place to hold
on to. As I'm hammering away, I hear what I almost thought was friend of mine
hooting like an owl from just behind the fence! It was so muffled and subdued
that I thought I must be hearing things. :)
I listened a bit more, pinned it as a [real] Great Horned Owl, and ran inside
for my glasses, binoculars, and boyfriend (so that I'd have a witness!).
As soon as we got back there again, it was still hooting, but as we walked, it
no doubt saw us and either flew away or stood silent. I didn't hear it the
rest of the night.
It's only our second owl in a year there that I've heard/seen - the first was a
Barred Owl that we saw back this past winter. Not sure if it was just passing
through, or if it nests in Loftridge, but, it was the first Great Horned Owl
that I have officially heard as a birder. :)
