VA Birders,

I stopped by Kettle Wind Sod Farms about 3:00 this afternoon and was
joined by Fred Atwood and three of his students.  We found thousands of
Laughing Gulls and many Killdeer which were joined by three American
Golden-Plovers and a flock of six sandpipers actively feeding in the
grass which we were pretty sure were Buff-breasted Sandpipers but the
heat haze was pretty bad.  I returned to the sight at 6:30 this evening
and counted a total of 10 golden-plovers and 7 Buff-breasted Sandpipers
(I've never seen that many before in one group!).  7 of the
golden-plovers and 4 of the Buff-breasted Sandpipers were in the dirt
where sod has been pulled up in the area nearest the airport.  The other
3 golden-plovers and 3 more Buffies were in the dirt where the sod has
been pulled up closest to Bristow Road and probably could be seen from
the parking lot of Centreville Sod Farms across Bristow Road (they seem
a bit more friendly to birders).  Anyway, I just have to remind everyone
that the owner of this sod farm (Kettle Wind) doesn't like birders, so I
wouldn't recommend driving down into the property.  At 6:00pm today, the
birds could easily be seen from Split Oak Lane with a scope.

This sod farm is a couple miles south (I guess it's south) of Rt. 28 on
the east side of Bristow Road in Prince William County.
