Howdy!
Thursday Sept 2, 2004 I searched some plowed
fields near Leedstown in northern Westmoreland
County near the Rappahannock River and some
grassy ponds and a sod farm in northern King
William County near the Mattaponi River.
Mattaponi River water level was very high from
the recent rain (whch also washed out several of
the roads including route 30). The high water
probably explains why so many shorebirds were in
these locations.
Westmoreland County (9 Am-12:00 noon)
1. Muse Farm, Leedstown Rd between Liberty Farm
Road and Leedstown campground

2. Parker Farm on Horner's Mill Rd, Leedstown
1 American golden plover
97 killdeer
3 buff-breasted sandpipers

King William County (1:30-7:30 PM)
3. Grassy pond at Green Pasture Lane, Beulahville
3 great egret, 1 green heron, 1 great blue heron
7 killdeer
1 spotted sandpiper
1 solitary sandpiper
8 lesser yellowlegs
1 greater yellowlegs
17 least sandpiper (mostly juvenile)
1 northern waterthrush
2 indigo bunting
4. Grassy farm pond at intersection of route 30
and 600 between Central Garage and King William.
(Be careful, this road can have dangerous
traffic)

80 least sandpiper (mostly juvenile)
6 semipalmated sandpiper (mostly juvenile)
1 western sandpiper (adult non-breeding)
1 baird's sandpiper ( adult non-breeding, a
county and peninsula first for me)
5. Sod Farm off Walkerton Road, King William
28 killdeer
1 pectoral sandpiper
18 least sandpiper (mostly juvenile)
2 solitary sandpiper
37 horned lark (Including a few juveniles that at
first glimpse I thought might be early
longspurs!)
6. my property along the Upper Mattaponi,
Beulahville (2-5 PM)
