Well, you have some points, I guess. However, I don't see how a "thank you"
note, or a slew of thank you notes, can do any harm.
I didn't know the details of the Cate familial relations to the bird, nor
didI know the Cates are on vacation.
The Marriott Ranch is a business, and went out of the way to accomodate an
event that is at best be a disruption. When I was there Friday, a little
before noon, there were at least six birders' vehicles in the lot (off to
oneside), plus a dozen birders and several scopes. I still think a note is
appropriate.
I followed the normal procedure in addressing senior officials, presuming
they will pass the word down the line, and also know that some people who
work for them did a good job. This e-mail went to the business mailbox,
which I obtained from the Marriott website. Can't be that much of a secret.

Kurt,
I'm not so sure that putting Lanier's email address on the listserv was a
great idea. He is in Florida for ten days with his family, and I don't know
how excited he will be to have a slew of email notes when he gets back. His
wife, Shannon Cate, is the person we really should thank. She is the oneMore
that has invited all of us out there, and she also discovered the bird.
than that, she had told a few people about it from Blandy and someone in
Winchester, and they came out to see it. Where Shannon went the extra mile
is when she realized that the people that saw the bird didn't share the
sighting with anyone (the bird was first seen on 29 July), she kept looking
until she found someone who would spread the word, which was Val Kitchens.
If she hadn't followed up, none of us would have had a chance to see the
bird, or the ranch for that matter.
Cheers...
Todd
