Following Marc Ribaudo's and Renee Grebe's recommendations, I visited
the World War Memorial in D.C. first this morning, then Monticello Park
in Alexandria. Both were wonderful. I saw more "good" species in
Alexandria, but that may have partly been because there were a lot of
sharp eyes and ears around me, whereas I only spotted one other birder
early this AM at the Memorial.
World War Memorial highlights: 5 warbler sp. plus 18 others
Monticello Park highlights: 10 warbler sp. plus 15 others
Note: Here are more detailed directions to the World War Memorial. It
is a circular open building, somewhat obscured by trees, just Southwest
of the World War 2 Memorial, or if you will just West of the John Paul
Jones statue. Lots of birds in all of the trees and bushes around it,
in a long grove running East-West. Closest parking I found was in the
lot on the Northeast side of the Tidal Basin. I also ran across a
couple of uncommon warbler species (unfortunately not ID'd) in the trees
near the JPJ statue, together with a good variety of yellow-rumped,
thrush, etc.
Complete lists follow (warblers first).
