Driving home just before dark last night, the Ruffed Grouse that hangs out near
my driveway was in his usual spot, but this time in full display. He was so
self-absorbed, I swear I could have touched him. I was able to park, get the
binocs, and watch him strut a fair distance and get very close to a female. The
amazing thing was how black the puffed-up ruff on his neck looked. And how
flashy the tail was in its fanned position. Definitely not a camouflaged grouse
anymore!
This am, 2 new feeder birds:
2 female Rose-breasted grosbeaks and a Blue Jay eating suet. Blue Jays are not
common up here at all and I've never seen one at my feeder. I have seen small
flocks during migration. To think that a Blue Jay and a Cardinal are relatively
rare birds for me !
