While taking family across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel yesterday to see
the massive bridge and have one of their mouth watering flounder sandwiches
at the restaurant we stopped on Island 2 with binocs to see what if anything
was happening. I was very pleasantly surprised to see 2 Wilson's Storm
Petrels dancing on the water in search of food. Better yet this was a lifer
for me as I have never been on a pelagic trip. What a joy to watch these
small birds that looked like butterflies skimming the water! Then an added
bonus...2 Yellow Crowned Night Herons were on the rocks. One was mature and
the other immature. Some sort of peep popped up as well but it was too quick
and my binocs were in someone else's hands at the moment. Needless to say I
enjoyed the birds much more than the sandwich!!! My non birder relatives got
to see a lifer dance and seemed a little more interested in birds after that.
I told them if they started a life list that was a pretty good bird for
someone from West Virginia to start off with!
