Yesterday, while kayaking on Smith Mountain Lake near the dam, I saw 2
black-crowned night herons and about 20 Redbreasted Mergansers; all must be
just
passing through, as I rarely ever see them. The lesser Scaup and a few horned
grebes passed through about a week ago, and the buffleheads also seem to be
gone. The immature loons (which wintered here) are just about in full adult
plumage, so I expect they will be leaving soon. I am waiting for the barn
swallows to be return, and then spring will really be here! Judy Stauffer
