I was thrilled to see a male Baltimore Oriole out my kitchen window first
thing this morning.the second one in a week. It was not enjoying the orange
I set out for it, but was pulling nesting material out of the "nesting
wreath" I set out for the birds. Thinking only the female built the nest, I
checked on-line and found that on occasion, the male will bring the female
nesting material. I hope this means they are nesting nearby and that I will
see him again (and perhaps the female too next time).
By 9:30 am I was checking out the swamp on Woods Edge Rd, near Colonial
Heights, where I found:
Great Egret
2 Brown-headed Nuthatches
Common Yellowthroat
Orchard Oriole (3rd time found at this location!)
Red-headed Woodpeckers
Red-tailed Hawk
Barn and Tree Swallows
Purple Martins
Kingfisher
Eastern Phoebe
Solitary Sandpiper
Canada geese
Yellow-Rumped Warblers
A possible Black-crowned Night Heron (roosting high in a tree very far
away-using my scope I couldn't make a positive ID)
Red-winged Blackbirds
At a marshy field/pond off Temple Avenue in Colonial Heights:
Barn and Tree Swallows
Killdeer
Mute Swan
Canada Geese
Least Sandpipers
Eastern Kingbird
Turkey Vulture
Northern Harrier
And tonight in my yard:
Female Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Male Summer Tanager high in the trees
And a chipmunk and a raccoon filling up on sunflower seed
