As Susan and I were eating dinner (chicken, of course!) and watching
the avian goings-on outside the dining room windows, we saw an adult
BALD EAGLE leave its perch atop a 20-foot pole at the edge of Metompkin
Bay, swoop leisurely across the marsh, effortlessly pluck an adult
CLAPPER RAIL out of the Spartina, and then fly to a piling near the
mouth of White's creek, where it landed and proceeded to pluck and eat
the rail. We watched that drama while, across from us, an aggregation
of 96 WILLITS probed the exposed creek bank for invertebrates,
seemingly unconcerned about the eagle perched only 100 yards away.
