[va-bird] bird and squirrel igloo

Hello VA birders--

During the past few months, we've had birds using the open space under our
sunroom for shelter. My "prize bird" is a handsome male towhee who showed up
about a week ago and has been hanging around (I think they're really
beautiful).

Several times during the day yesterday, I threw seed and old bread out my
dining room window so that it would land on the ground near the opening and
not get buried by the snow. The birds must have been hunkered down out of
sight because I hardly saw any for most of the day, so the food got buried.

But this morning, the squirrels finally came out from hiding. They must have
smelled the food because I watched them start from the dry covered area and
burrow at least a foot into the snow, making a little cave to get at it!
When they left, the juncos, wrens, sparrows, and the towhee started running
in and out of it to get their share. I found this fascinating and amusing to
watch. All told, I've seen the following "snow birds" yesterday and today:

Downy Woodpecker
Eastern Towhee
Junco
Song Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Chickadee
Northern Cardinal
Carolina Wren
White-Breasted Nuthatch
American Crow

Birdwatching is a great way to fight cabin fever!!
