[va-bird] abbey birds 2/26/05

What a beautiful day, and what a lot of birds about (for February)! The feeders
were hopping this morning, with a Fox Sparrow who has been showing up most days
for the last week, 7 Red-winged Blackbirds who are singing and nosing around
the ponds, and a Purple Finch in with the House and Goldfinches. A Phoebe was
around the barn, as well as Bluebirds and Robins, Yellow-rumped Warblers and a
few dozen Starlings and some Meadowlarks in the pastures. A male Harrier came
through, and had good luck: he caught and ate a field mouse within full view.
A walk down our river turned up a Ruffed Grouse, 2 Winter Wrens, a Brown
Creeper and some Golden-crowned Kinglets and White-br. Nuthatches, as well as
plenty of Woodpeckers.

Then, just before sunset a Great Blue Heron flew slowly over the ponds and then
settled down in a pine tree to roost.
