While checking the Bluebird boxes along the W&OD trail at Clark's
Crossing, in Fairfax County, VA, Larry Meade and I found a =
Yellow-bellied
Flycatcher. It was a lifer for both of us. Larry first spotted the Empid =
on
the edge of the equestrian field west of Clark's Crossing, as it moved =
from
bush to tree branch along the edge of the field. It was very yellow on =
the
chest and belly and had two white wing bars. I did not see any eye-ring, =
but
I didn't know enough to look for this field mark. Furthermore I did not =
hear
any vocalization from this bird, so, if this is like the Willow/Alder, =
and
vocalization is essential, I apologize. However, this bird was bright =
yellow
underneath and clearly an Empid; it must have been a Yellow-bellied. A
White-eyed Vireo was calling from deeper in the bush, but I sure I am =
not
miss identifying a WE Vireo.=20
Other notables were the Prairie Warblers, at least four were heard
and two were seen. They were very close in the small trees in the =
equestrian
field. Brian Swanson, who was also with us, said that Prairies have been
breeding here for years.=20
The trail had one box with 3 Bluebird babies and another box had 5
Bluebird eggs. The complete list of birds follows.
