Well...even w. a late start, I had no problem finding YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLERS today, they were pretty much everywhere...Possum Point Rd (off Rt. 1
in
Dumfries) held the most, along w. some PINE WARBLERS. There was still 1 TUNDRA
(not Trumpeter) SWAN on Quantico Creek. Also some SNIPE, G. YELLOWLEGS,
KILLDEER
and a mess of WOOD DUCKS. Had a flyover COOPERS HAWK on Cockpit Road and a
few GC KINGLETS on a subdued (Sub Dudes?) Sunday morning.
Slid west to Prince William Forest Park to try for Hooded Warblers and LA
Waterthrush - saw or heard none, but PINE WARBLERS were plentiful throughout
the
park and picked up 1 PALM WARBLER. There is an extensive burn area between
the Oak Ridge Campground road and Malwavi Rd. and that part of the park is
closed...Fire crews are still on the job...Two PHOEBES at parking lot E had
their
eye on one of the information signs (with a roof) that looked like it had been
used for a nest site previously.
Next went to Leesylvania State park where there were more YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLERS and (very YELLOW) PALM WARBLERS. Spied a CAROLINA WREN w. nesting
material heading into a rotten log...only saw 1 PURPLE MARTIN waiting patiently
on
the porch of one of the nest boxes near the visitor center.
Met up w. Kurt Gaskill at Julie Metz and we walked some of the pods.
Highlights were one BLUE GRAY GNATCATCHER and one KING RAIL that went off just
as we
walked by. Also scared up one BROWN THRASHER...
