Va Birders,
This evening (March 19, 2005) Rich Rieger, Russ Taylor and I decided to
check out the Woodcock Meadow at Huntley Meadows to see if there were any
displaying Woodcocks around. As we walked along the Hike-Bike path toward the
meadow a little after 6 PM we noticed a Red Fox walking along the path. We
got
great looks at this beautiful animal as it strolled around out in the open for
quite a while not more than 20 yards from us. We got to the meadow around
6:20 and noticed that it had been mowed fairly recently. With the warm night
and short grass, we were optomistic. We were not disappointed, because within
5 minutes a Woodcock whizzed by low and landed nearby. He soon started
peenting and we got good looks at him on the ground. Soon, he took off into
the
sky and flew over the meadow doing his display. We also observed one other
Woodcock displaying around the same time (6:30-6:50).
