The Wood Ducks who were searching for an appropriate nesting cavity in the
woods that we live in have ret'd.
We first saw them in our backyard on March 31, again on April 2 and at the
beginning of this week.
They showed up again this morning, 4/12, while I was eating breakfast - they
checked out several holes. It was fascinating watching the male fly to a hole,
look inside, turn around and make some kind of sound to the female. She would
check out the holes but did not seem satisfied with any of them in the 30
minutes or so that I watched them. One of the places they checked out was the
hollow top (about 20 to 25 feet high) of a large snag. They looked it over
thoroughly but left it went a couple of squirrels came out rather excited. All
of the rest of the places they checked out were higher than this one, some much
higher. The other cavities were in an old locust tree, some big oaks and a
cherry or two.
I finally lost sight of them as they moved around the side of the house and
went deeper into the woods.
I have my fingers crossed they will be successful. If they succeed it will be
one more thing I can use to convince my neighbors to not cut down dead trees
unless they pose an actual hazard.
