After 4 pm Friday afternoon, my husband and I arrived at Hunting Creek
in Alexandria to search for the Wilson's Storm Petrel we heard about
from the No. Va. Bird Club phone tree. When we arrived, two other
birders pointed out to us TWO members of this species. We observed the
birds for quite a while as they floated on the water. Eventually, one of
the birds flew about briefly a little above the water, which allowed us
to observe the wing patterns, fluttering flight style, and even-edged
(not notched) tail characteristic of the Wilson's.
