Arriving at my office in Reston this morning, I heard a willow
flycatcher singing from the scrub woodland adjacent to our office near
Wiehle Ave and Sunset Hills Dr.
Last Friday, in addition to seeing a good number of birds in my part of
southwestern Loudoun
County, I also witnessed an interesting raptorial behavior by a crow. I
am not sure which crow species it was.
At about 6:15 AM, above a country road flanked on both sides by nearly
overcovering canopies of oak, tulip tree and hickory, I watched a red
bat make three feeding circuits over a 100-150 yd distance. After the
first complete loop, a crow started actively pursuing the bat, nearly
catching it three times. The crow followed the fleeing bat very closely
looking not unlike an accipiter chasing a songbird or dove. The bat
escaped. This time.
