VA BIRDers,
For a fine way to finish off the month in Northern Virginia, Kim Peacock and I
found an adult male White-winged Scoter hanging out with some Ring-necked Ducks
and a few nearby Ruddy Ducks on Belmont Bay. We viewed from the Visitor Center
Overlook of Mason Neck State Park at about 3 pm today. We estimate the
waterfowl on the bay were numbered as:
Canada Goose 350
Ring-necked Duck 75
Lesser Scaup 2000
Greater Scaup: Kim suggested a few good candidates
White-winged Scoter 1
Bufflehead 32
Hooded Merganser 8
Common Merganser 1, a brilliant male
Ruddy Duck 1000, give or take...
Also, a visit to Julie Metz turned up 3 very handsome American Tree Sparrows
associating with a fine, large mixed sparrow flock on the west end. And one of
the Fox Sparrows sang briefly!
