Hi all,
Thank goodness for my honey do list. If I had not been outside working on
my "chores" I might not have been able to see a White-winged Dove in my yard
this weekend.
What got my senses tuned to birds & away from the work at hand (Its not hard
to find a reason to bird especially when there is work to be shirked!), was
that I heard a late N. Rough-winged Swallow flying high overhead. So I
stopped to watch that bird & began to scan around looking for more.
I saw what I first thought was a Rock Dove fly off a power line - then I
thought no, just a big Mourning Dove. Then I noticed the kestrel/nighthawk
kind of wing beats, slow & lazy. It landed in a tree & ran to get my bins.
It flushed & cut low toward me, passing by at eye level four feet away. The
white on the wings flashed bright. Luckily it circled around & found
another tree to land in. I was able to get my scope & tripod out and
