Today, Jan 28, at about 2:00 PM, from the Dyke Marsh boardwalk, while busy
sorting through Common and Hooded Mergansers in search of Red-breasted
Mergansers, I saw two ducks I could only conclude were White-Winged Scoters
flying south down the Potomac River. They were all black except for white
secondary wing patches, and were flying close to the water, about 250 to 300
yards out (Maryland waters). The lighting was excellent, no heat waves, weak
sunlight behind me, I did not observe any white on their faces, but they
may have been females, or late first winter birds, or maybe just too far away
to detect.
