I just received this email from Oregon birder Alan Contreras, who was
visiting Williamsburg:
"At the Radisson/Fort Magruder in Williamsburg, on the evening of August 4 I
saw a nearly complete white hummingbird there, the first one I have ever seen.
It was
feeding in the plantings around the hotel. It was entirely white except a
few gray-green feathers on the crown and a couple of dark feathers that seemed
to be midway out a couple of tail feathers on each side. Quite stunning; I
thought at first it was some kind of odd insect.
It was very approachable. I surmise Ruby-throated. The bill was slightly
decurved and longer than my local Anna's. The right size for Ruby-throated.
Because of its coloring it seemed wingless at a distance, to float and sail
here and there without obvious means of locomotion."
