After a flurry of yellow-rumps early in the week, they petered out again
late. Thursday and Friday were pretty quiet, although the resident CATBIRDS
finally showed up on Friday. This is four days later than my previous late
date, and about ten days later than the average.
This afternoon after the rain let up, things were hopping. I was greeted by
a singing HOODED and B&W WARBLERS at the entrance. Three YELLOW-RUMPS, two
female YELLOW-THROATS, and a singing NORTHERN H2OTHRUSH rounded out the
warblers. My first CUCKOO of the year (on the early side) and 3 RC KINGLETS
(just about at the late date) were nice. But the dominant birds were
thrushes. I saw at least 10 HERMITS (none singing) and 3 WOODS (2 singing).
I predict that tomorrow will rock. Get out in the field. And for those
with kids, take them to Wetlands Awareness Day, Sunday from 12-3, at
Huntley.
