(Whips wanted? Let's not go there----)
First, I want to remind everyone of how helpful this
listserv is to people who are new to the
state---excuse me, Commonwealth--and are figuring out
where things are. Thanks to all of you, within the
past month or so I've seen kites in Greenville County,
Dickcissel near Rapidan, Mourning Warblers at Paddy's
Knob (yesterday) and lots more, including a huge Black
Bear at Monterey Mountain. We newcomers rely on you to
find out which backroads have had the "good" stuff.
I did go to Highland County over the 4th; evidently
many things have left or have become silent since they
were reported in June, but I still found UNsinging
Mourning, Chestnut-sided, Canada, B&W, Redstart,
Parula, Ovenbird, La Waterthrush, Black-thr Blue,
Magnolia, Blackburnian and Hooded warblers--but not
Golden-winged or Cerulean, despite searching the spots
where they were reported last month. Nonetheless, I
had a ball; Blue-headed Vireos were singing at many
stops, I flushed Ruffed Grouse and Turkeys, listened
to duelling Veeries and Wood thrushes, found sapsucker
families--oh, and also noted the Acadian flycatchers
that someone mentioned recently from Locust Springs. I
too was surprised that they were at such high
altitude, but then I didn't expect Indigo buntings at
the top of mountains either. Learning all the time.
Okay, back to the whips. I live in Hampton Roads; can
anyone tell me where the closest reliable sites are
for whip-poor-will? I always intend to get to Phelps
and the other places that the "northerners" report,
but I've not been able to get there yet. Any places
closer to Richmond where they're likely? I'd
appreciate any information (and, how far into the
summmer are they likely to call?). Thanks in
