After reading several postings wondering where the waterfowl went when the
lakes are frozen over....Tom and I decided to go look around. We decided to
move north (from our southern Va Bch home).
First stop was Owls Creek (by VMSM). Looking down the creek past the Museum
we could still see icy water...but...the boat launch area was clear.Clear of
ice and clear of ducks. We spotted a few Ruddy's along the far shore and a
very nice sub-adult Bald Eagle perched in the tree across from the VMSM.
Under the Eagle we spotted about 20 Pelicans (br) on the rocks resting. They
were so still we almost over looked them as they blended well with the rocks.
Other than that a few DC Cormorants, 2 Mallards and about 3 RB Gulls. Far
from what we expected to see. We ventured up to Rudee Inlet to give a look
over the ocean...empty except for a few Gannets in the distance and
one...yes..one... gull. We quickly passed Lake Holly as it was frozen solid
and proceeded to Ft Story. It looks like Ned had all the scoters in Cape
Charles! We didn't have anything save a few more Gannets. On we went to
Lynnhaven Inlet...same story...just gulls.
Any Va Beachers seeing any ducks? Tom will ask a couple of the hunters at the
AWHM if they have spotted any. Yes, the hunters are our friends! They give us
GREAT tips on where to find our ducks :-)
