[va-bird] Western Fairfax Co. 4/29/06

VA BIRDers,

 

I visited Western Fairfax Co today (all classified as piedmont), mainly the
Pleasant Valley Rd/Sully Woodland and nearby locations, Bull Run PO Rd, Bull
Run Park and the UOSA facility.  Best spots were along the power line cut on
the south side of Sully Woodland - the road is gated and goes west to a
natural gas pumping plant.  The other good spot was on the north side of the
Sully Woodland field, along the mostly seasonal stream (this is the location
where No. Saw-whet Owls have been found several times during CBCs).
Highlights today were Osprey, Northern Harrier and Broad-winged Hawk over
Sully Woodland fields, Spotted Sandpiper at UOSA, Belted Kingfisher in the
little park near Braddock Rd and Old Lee Rd - this area has some soccer
fields and a pet dog training area (plus a few Orchard Orioles and 2
Red-shouldered Hawk territories), Blue-headed Vireo at Bull Run Park near
the swimming pool, Nashville Warbler at Sully Woodland (southern side),
Black-throated Green Warblers at Sully Woodland and Bull Run Park, Savannah
and Grasshopper Sparrows and Blue Grosbeak at Sully Woodland field, and
single Indigo Bunting on Bull Run PO Rd.  Tallies of the more interesting
species follow.
