This morning my wife and I checked out the Head of Slate Creek, a long dark
hollow near Compton Mt. There along the Rhododendron bordered stream we found 3
Louisiana Waterthrushes and our first Black-throated Green Warbler of the
season. This is a new early date for both of these species for Buchanan County.
The waterthrush beat the early date by one day and this is the first recorded
sighting of a Black-throated Green in the area during the month of March.
Previously the early date was April 4th. We also saw a Great Blue Heron feeding
along the stream, which was an unusual sighting for the area. Golden-crowned
Kinglets, Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Blue-headed Vireos were also actively
feeding.
