VA BIRDers,
I started out near Dyke Marsh, then south to the Virginia portion of
Riverside Park, then Jackson Abbott Wildlife Refuge (not near the Potomac,
but close by and adjacent to Huntley Meadows), Pohick Bay Regional Park
(also viewing Accotink Bay at Ft Belvoir), Mason Neck SP, Mason Neck NWR
Great Marsh Trail, Hallowing Point and Occoquan Marina (looking towards
Fairfax Co from Pr William Co). Total time was about 5 hours along these
points. Nothing really unusual but a fine mix of waterfowl - the next 2-3
weeks should be best as the diving ducks are heading north and the dabblers
wintering to the south come through. The only Osprey was at Dyke Marsh.
Tree Swallows at Dyke and Occoquan Marina. Large groups of Tundra Swans
were noted in Accotink Bay, Belmont Bay (Mason Neck SP) and the Great Marsh.
Missed Common Goldeneye; 18 species of ducks overall. Canada Geese and
Mallard numbers down by a factor of 3 or more; no American Coots noted.
Over a thousand scaup plus others noted in Pr William Co south of Occoquan
Bay NWR. Today's numbers follow.
