[va-bird] "WINGED MIGRATION" movie at Norfolk NARO & notes

Of note on Maryland's bird listserv of late is a report of Reddish Egret at
Ocean City 23 June (yesterday) near Skimmer Island; perhaps a defector from
Chincoteague! Birds news is hard to come by here lately. The largest
"arribada"
of Horseshoe Crabs actually seemed to be 14 June, on the highest tide
associated with the full moon (very late); it came too late to be of much good
to
shorebirds that feast on the crabs' eggs, of course, but many lingering
shorebirds and Laughing Gulls did take advantage of them. The high tides, most
unfortunately, wiped out large colonies of terns and Black Skimmers on the
Eastern
Shore barrier islands, as well as flooding nests of Clapper Rail, Willet, and
American Oystercatcher. It's not clear that these species have time to renest.

Late June marks a real lull here in southern Northampton County, so maybe a
good time for southeast Virginians to catch the marvelous non-fiction film
"Winged Migration," playing tonight (Tuesday) at 7:15 p.m. at the NARO Expanded
Cinema on Colley Avenue, in Norfolk. It will also be playing from late this
week through 6 July at least.
