Maryland and Virginia birders:
I birded Virginia's Northern Neck today. I started at Caledon Natural Area,
and then birded Lands End WMA, and the Wilna Unit of the Rappahannock River
Valley NWR before ending the day at the George Washington Birthplace Nat'l
Monument. After locating the CACKLING GOOSE on Popes Creek near the Visitors
Center (reported by James Goehring last week), I took the road that runs past
the Burial Grounds to the Potomac River. From the beach, I located a WESTERN
GREBE among the moderate number of waterfowl (mostly greater scaup,
buffleheads, goldeneyes, surf scoters and ruddy ducks) at about 4:30 this
afternoon. The grebe and a majority of the waterfowl were to the west of the
end of the road, and all definitely in Maryland waters (It was nice to add a
bird to my MD list while birding in VA). Although the grebe was somewhat
distant, through my scope, I was able to see the details necessary to eliminate
Clark's grebe. I took notes and will submit the siting the MD/DC Record
Committee. The grebe was actively feeding when I left just before 5:00 PM.
Other nice birds today included the NINE red-headed woodpeckers on the Flats
Trail and lower part of Boyd's Hole Trail at Caledon and the brown thrasher at
the Rappahannock River NWR.
Good birding and good luck to anyone that goes looking for the western grebe.
