All,
Unfortunately car break-ins do happen in this area and throughout James
River Park System. In general you should exercise the same degree of caution
you would when birding in any urban location. Just be aware, and probably it
is best to buddy with someone. Don't leave anything of value in your car. I
bird a lot in Richmond and luckily have not been robbed, but I see the
broken glass all the time.
There is another lot to access the Floodwall area. I can't say that it is
any safer, but I park there regularly. It is off of Hull St at the South end
of Mayo's Bridge. To get to the Hull St parking lot go south on 14th street.
This will take you across the Mayo's Bridge. Stay right. At the end of the
bridge the road bends sharply to the right. Almost immediately take a right
turn into the parking lot. Take the side walk that goes across the
creek/canal (Cauthorne Paper is on your left) and follow up onto the
floodwall.
Another alternative could be to park in a downtown lot and walk the the
above directions. It's a bit of a hike, maybe a mile.
