Dear fellow birders,

I found some interesting birds on a nice trip to the Virginia Beach area
with my wife, daughter, and in-laws on Monday, Jan. 15.

At a beach in Ocean View: apparent Ruddy Turnstones, Great Black-backed
Gulls, and Forster's Terns. Note: the Ring-billed Gulls here are very
tame-if you toss them something to eat. It provides a good opportunity to
study the differences between the different-year individuals up-close.

At Lynnhaven Inlet-thanks to Rexanne Bruno for directions-two apparent Brant
(quite distant but with apparent black head, neck, chest, pale sides), Brown
Pelican, Red-breasted Merganser, Bufflehead, and many gulls.

At Virginia Beach (northern end, where residential housing meets the beach):
Northern Gannet-several, Brown Pelican-very many, Cormorant-very many,
Red-throated Loon-2 (likely, I'm unfamiliar with the species having moved
from Utah), many gulls including apparent Bonaparte's.

Important Note: As a birder on a modest income, I identified the above
species with 8X42 and 10X50 binoculars, no scope was used.

Good birding!

Josh Kreitzer

ps: On my second visit to First Landing State Park's cypress swamp, I was
again unimpressed by the wildlife. I saw a flock of robins flying overhead,
but no other bird or creature of any kind was seen. Perhaps morning is
better, or maybe summer? In any case, it is a beautiful swamp with tall
cypress trees and hanging spanish moss.
