VA Birders,
Today, while my wife, Lynda, and I (Roger Mayhorn) were checking some bluebird
boxes in the Breaks Interstate Park area of Buchanan and Dickenson Counties, we
found some interesting birds but no warblers. We found BLUE-HEADED VIREOS in 5
different locations within the park. Three TREE SWALLOWS were active in an open
area near the park. A RED-TAILED HAWK was being stooped on by a pair of
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS as all three raptors were being chased by a small flock of
crows. Another pair of RED-TAILS were observed a mile or so distant from this
activity.
Shortly after, a Wilson's Snipe was flushed from a soggy field not far away.
By the way 6 partially completed bluebird nests were found in nest boxes. The
first partial nest was found on 3/26, a new early record for our young bluebird
trails.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
