We spent the day checking known raptor nests in Augusta, Frederick, Rockingham,
& Shenandoah counties.
As opposed to yesterday, when most were snow-covered, today we found a number
that had birds sitting ON them. The farther south we went, the less snow we
encountered, making it more likely to find them occupied.
Of prime interest was the BALD EAGLE on the nest in Rockingham. Even though the
nest is 1/4 mile from the road, she was keeping a close eye on us. The mate was
sitting about 50 yards from her.
RED-TAILED HAWK - Occupied nests:
Augusta - 2
Rockingham - 4
Shenandoah - 2
In addition, we found 4 new UNoccupied nests to be re-checked later.
PIPITS: large flock (200-300+?) at Kay's pond, Rockingham Co. plus many others
elsewhere, all day.
HARRIER - 1 Gray Ghost - Augusta/Rockingham line (over river)
SNIPE - Frederick Co. only
Leonard's Pond: GW Teal & Mallard only
