Had time this morning to stop at the new boat ramp on Lynnhaven Inlet (after
voting) and check out the sand flats which have been loaded with birds at low
tide. There were at least 6 BRANT along with the resident CANADA GEESE, the
first BRANT I have seen this fall.Over 100 SKIMMERS among the thousands of
gulls, mostly LAUGHING but all the local gulls were present. I believe that
someone with the time and expertise could scan this flock and maybe fine a rare
gull in there. Also seen were 3 OYSTER CATCHERS, 1 OSPREY, 1 KINGFISHER ,20
BROWN PELICANS and a flock of 40-50 GREEN WING TEAL.
On my way back to the parking lot I was fortunate enough to watch a GREAT BLACK
GULL dropping a clam on the pavement and thus breaking it so he could get to
the meat. The lot is littered with broken clam shells.
