To VSO Birders Attending the Va. Beach Weekend:
When I reserved a room at the Howard Johnson's in Va. Beach for the VSO
Weekend, I learned that the block of rooms that had been reserved for us was
a block of smoking rooms! I talked to 2 or 3 people at the hotel before I
left for our NVBC Northern Neck weekend (a report will be posted soon) and
told them in no uncertain terms that I was smoke-sensitive and would not stay
in a smoking room. In any event, when I called again this afternoon, I was
told by a woman named Debbie, who is on duty until 11 pm this evening (I
don't know if she is on tomorrow afternoon or not), that after some
discussion, they added some non-smoking rooms to our block. However, after 3
other NVBC birders and I had reserved non-smoking rooms, I was told that
HoJo's only has 11 non-smoking rooms left for our weekend. Any of you who
have signed up for a room at the hotel can call and change your reservation
to a non-smoking room as long as they are available. It was not clear if any
others had been switched, so I suggest you call and check ASAP.
I don't know who reserved the block of rooms for the weekend. Perhaps
Larry Lynch will know. In any event, I hope we can change this policy before
next year. (When I reserve a block of rooms for our NVBC weekends, I reserve
most or all non-smoking rooms, as that is what most of our members want--and
I have found that the non-smoking rooms usually sell out first.)
I am sending this message on VA-Bird because I told Debbie I would try to
notify other VSO birders about the rooms, and this seemed like the best way
to reach you. If any of you know of others who might want this information,
please pass it on.
