Hi VA Birders;
This is a delayed posting, but may be of interest none-the-less. My
family and I made a trip to Sandbridge from SW PA this past weekend and
enjoyed some nice birds while there (19th, 20th).
Quantico: Bald Eagle
CBBT: many hundreds of Gannets (also plentiful at
Sandbridge), Purple Sands, 1 Great Cormorant, 1 Oystercatcher, small
number of Surf Scoters
Rudee Inlet: Red-throated Loon
BBNWR: American Bittern - great roadside looks
Stumpy: Golden Eagle!
Ft. Story several Lesser Black-backed Gulls
Sandbridge: C. Loon on the beach - the bird was fine - my nephews
and my own enjoyed it very much prior to release; E. Collared-Doves
(thanks list serve)
I was pre-occupied with photographing a Brown Watersnake and so missed
seeing the Golden come through. My wife is certain it was an eagle and
saw no white on the bird (+ had faintly banded tail; with other
consistent field marks). They are a regular at our local hawkwatch at
home, but we've never seen one in VA Beach before.
Happily observed Harbor Seals at Island #3 - a first for us on the CBBT.
