VA BIRDers,
Phil Kenny and I visited a few places Sunday morning in No. VA; the bulk of
our time was along Freezeland Rd in the Thompson WMA area. A relatively fine
day considering it was mid-August. We came across a mixed flock in the
relatively open area near Catbird Heaven and were quite surprised at finding a
HY
Tennessee Warbler.
We started our morning checking the trail from parking lot #6 (or whatever
its called now; the Trillium trail begins there) and besides several E. Wood
Pewees calling there was little else stirring or singing. We heard some chip
notes and quickly pished up an adult female Hooded which was very cooperative.
After leaving this area, we heard two other Hooded chip notes as we drove the
road towards our final destination - a significant decrease from the last few
weeks.
Parking at lot #9, the lot just before Catbird Heaven, we walked the road
north and soon came across a couple of HY Chestnut-sided Warblers - a fine and
unexpected delight. As there were few other birds at this location we
continued
our walk until we came across a pleasantly diverse mixed flock. Here many
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were encountered and several HY E. Towees were found.
As
the group moved passed, a Least Flycatcher snuck through, calling once as it
melted away along the hedgerow. The bulk of our warblers were in this area
with several looks at the Tennessee. On the way back, we encountered the
Tennessee again and got fine looks at a Wormie before a HY male Rose-breasted
Grosbeak hammed into the picture. Below is brief summary of our observations.
