Harry Gurkin and I spend about three hours at Upper Thompson Wildlife
Management Area late Sat. morning and early sat. afternoon. We had a
spectacular visit. it was cool and wet as it had just rained. There
were(are) still few leaves on the trees, but the Trillium and other
wildflowers were in full and fresh bloom. There were lots of birds as
well. We heard 6-8 Cerulean warblers and saw three. One of these was just
above eye level about 30-yards off the trail. We had spectacular views for
about ten minutes. We heard at least 6 Kentucky warblers and again had one
amazing view of a bird 30 feet away and at eye level. We also heard 6-8
Hooded warblers and saw two. One of these was for about five minutes
flitting about down in the trillium (it would have been the best warbler
photo imaginable.) There were also excellent eye-level views of several
Scarlet tanagers both male and female. . Now is the time to go to Upper
Thompson, as the birds and flowers are in abundance and there is little leaf
cover to hide the birds.
