Birders,
There are indeed TEN UPLAND SANDPIPERS in Remington, at the sod farm on
Sumerduck Road! Easily visible by bins from the road, a scope is necessary
to really see these fellow and gals. Great spot and one of the "old" places
that
hasn't been taken over by development.
Mike Iwanik and I left Gerry Weinberger to his own devices and went sod-farm
birding, since we are on the cusp of the grasspiper migration. Our next stop
was the sod farm on Bristow Rd in Nokesville. Not much to look at so far
except a couple of HORNED LARKS and KILDEER. However, in the days
to come, particularly if we get rain there should be more for our viewing
pleasure.
Then Mike and I decided to check out the sod farm area in Ashburn, Loudoun
County, off Rte 7. This is becoming an unmitigated disaster area rapidly.
VDOT which claims to have no money is charging ahead with the Loudoun
County Parkway which is following the old Smith Switch Rd from Rte 7 to
its connection on the other side of Waxpool Rd. Folks, I'm afraid this is the
final year, if, indeed, we haven't already had our final year, for this
formerly
super spot for plovers and sandpipers. If we get a good rain this large field
may be worth a visit but today it was as dry as the Sonora and nary a bird was
to be seen.
