Gerry Hawkins and I took our dates, Martha and Diana, to see the Common
Nighthawk show off Rt. 7 in Tysons Corner last nite...we were not disappointed
(and neither were our dates). Got there around 8:40 or so and from Rt. 7 could
see the birds circling thru the lights. There were a few other folks there
already. I counted around a dozen as soon as I looked up, but the birds seemed
to be coming in waves. Within ten minutes or so, there were probably 75 birds
above the two buildings. Hard to get a count, as some were so high they almost
looked like stars. Number seemed to drop a bit thru the next half hour, maybe
some of the birds were stuffed and took a break....Still 50 birds working the
lights when we left.
Take a friend, take a blanket - there is a lawn on the west side of the
building, (Gallows Rd. side) that we all laid down on - give the neck a rest,
great
views as the birds circled above. The Nighthawk show takes place above the
buildings on the Southest corner of Rt. 7 and Gallows Rd...
